Fujimori leaves novelist's home, moves to condominium

TOKYO, Japan - Deposed Peruvian President Alberto Fujimori on March 5 leaves the home of his friend, Japanese novelist Ayako Sono (L), to move into an expensive condominium in downtown Tokyo. Fujimori had been living in Sono's house in Tokyo's Ota Ward since last November. Her husband Shumon Miura (2nd from L), also a novelist, joined her in bidding farewell to Fujimori.

TOKYO, Japan - About 50 people from Japan, Peru and five other countries march Jan. 16 to the house in Tokyo where deposed Peruvian President Alberto Fujimori is staying, to hand him a letter urging him to return home as well as an economy-class air ticket to Peru. The demonstrators from the Japanese civic organization Peace Boat were unable to hand over the ticket, with police in front of the house in Tokyo's Ota Ward maintaining nobody was home. The house belongs to Japanese writer Ayako Sono.

The Japanese-Peruvians, along with Japanese members of a citizens group calling for democratic reforms in Peru, chanted ''Fujimori, go home.'' Fujimori, who is staying at the Tokyo home of novelist Ayako Sono, refuses to return to Peru, where authorities want him to face trial over allegations that he amassed illegal funds while in office.

Sono welcomes former Peruvian Pres. Fujimori

TOKYO, Japan - Japanese novelist Ayako Sono tells the press Nov. 27 that she offered deposed Peruvian President Alberto Fujimori to stay at her house in Tokyo's Ota Ward as a gesture of goodwill. Sono said she knows Fujimori in her capacity as head of the Nippon Foundation, which has funded development projects in Peru. Fujimori stopped over in Tokyo on Nov. 17 after attending a summit of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum in Brunei. He was originally scheduled to stay in Japan for one night.

Novelist Sono wins Helen Keller Award

NEW YORK, United States - U.S. civic group Helen Keller International (HKI) says Feb. 11 it has presented popular Japanese novelist Ayako Sono with its ''Spirit of Helen Keller Award'' in New York in recognition of her many years of firm commitment to ending needless suffering worldwide.
